DePuy ASR Hip Recall

DePuy Orthopedics, a Johnson and Johnson division, issued a global recall of the ASR hip system on August 24, 2010.

This recall applies to patients who have had a hip replacement since 2003. (DePuy implants prior to this date are not subject to the recall.)

The replacement recall affects the following products:

- ASR XL Acetabular System

- DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System

It has been determined that this hip implant fails at a very high rate and can cause high levels of metal ion release. The failure rate is twice the normal rate for comparable products. Patients have been or may be subjected to a revision surgery as a result of the recall.

If known, patients are urged to contact their orthopedic surgeons or hospitals where the implant was placed to find out the brand of implant inserted.

Although many hip replacement surgeries performed with the DePuy hip replacement systems were successful, statistics show that within five years after the device was implanted, revision surgery was needed .
